Owner/Head Coach Robert Walber has been involved in CrossFit since 2009 and doesn’t specialize in anything in particular (true Old School CrossFit)—however, he is quite good at bodyweight/gymnastics movements that are commonly found in CrossFit training.
Passionate about his family, friends and relationships inside and outside of the gym, Robert loves to help others change their lives for the better through exercise. "I love watching the development and improvement of our members over the months and years that they are here working out with us," he says. "The things that some of these men and women accomplish is truly an inspiration for us to keep on doing what we’re doing! I also love the relationships I’ve formed with everyone in our community. I’ve been invited to weddings, engagement parties, baby christenings, and many other events. The members have made me a part of their families."
Growing up, Robert played baseball, handball, and was a pretty decent breakdancer in the mid 2000s. Accomplishments? "Hmm...I won my high school’s talent show in 2003, along with three other friends, for our breakdancing performance, if that counts!" After discovering CrossFit in 2009, he read and watched any piece of CrossFit media he could find online. "It was a whole new world to me beyond what I was learning in undergrad for my exercise science degree. I saw that CrossFit was truly changing people, and as a result, changing the world for the better. I wanted to be a part of that change and have a positive impact on other people’s lives."
In December 2010, Robert received his CrossFit L1 and began coaching at the nearest affiliate. After learning the ropes and coaching hundreds of different people for nearly two and a half years, he had the opportunity to take his passion for helping others and open his own affiliate. CrossFit Flushing opened its doors on April 1, 2013, and has been proudly serving the community ever since.
